Women's Build 2011
Iron Mountain Daily News Article

KINGSFORD - The Fourth Annual Women Build Week challenges women to devote at least one day between April 30 and May 8 to the effort to eliminate poverty housing.

Nineteen local women answered the challenge and spent a day working on the Habitat house at 240 Hemlock St. in Kingsford. This house was donated to Habitat for Humanity Menominee River by the Wells Fargo Real Estate Donation program.

Developed through the partnership between Lowe's, sponsor of the week, and Habitat for Humanity, National Women Build program brings women from all walks of life together to learn construction skills and then use those construction skills to build simple, decent affordable houses. The local build focused on removing siding and gutting the inside of the home.

June Nanninga, the Habitat partner homeowner, was on site ripping down wallboard alongside the volunteers.

Lowe's is providing Habitat for Humanity Menominee River with a $5,000 grant as well as in-store volunteer training in support of this one-day build.

Nationwide, by 2013 Lowe's will have contributed nearly $40 million to Habitat's work, in addition to the in-store training and volunteer labor. More than 1,800 Women Build houses have been built since the Women Build program started in 1998.

HFH Menominee River, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, is a nonprofit Christian organization dedicated to eliminating poverty housing. Habitat for Humanity brings together people with resources and people in need to build simple, decent, affordable houses.

HFH Menominee River has built 27 houses in the community. For more information call 779-5377 or visit www.habitatmr.com.
