Habitat for Humanity is Building Second Home in Iron County
Families in need of decent housing in Iron County are finding a solution in Habitat for Humanity Menominee River. The Ryan and Lyndsay Hamel family will be purchasing a Habitat home after it is complete in the fall of this year. “We just had our groundbreaking ceremony and now we know that our dream will come true” said Lyndsay Hamel.
The construction site is being developed and volunteers will be needed to build the house located on Pisoni Street in Iron River. Individual volunteers as well as teams of volunteers are needed to help with the build. To become a construction volunteer please contact Sharon at the Habitat office at 906-779-5377, no construction experience is necessary.
Habitat for Humanity is a Christian housing ministry that helps lower income families with decent affordable housing. The ministry started in 2010 in Iron County with the construction of its first house. Over twenty volunteers from the county have been organized to support family selection, fund development, site selection, construction, organizing volunteers and leading the effort.
Habitat has purchased land in Crystal Falls and plans are to build there in 2012. To qualify for this home a family must be willing to volunteer 200 hours per adult with Habitat, make enough to support the house payments yet make less than 50% of the median income in the county, and currently live in inadequate conditions. If you are interested please contact the Habitat office.
Donations are important to Habitat for Humanity’s success. As a non-profit organization all donations are tax deductible. These donations can be financial, in-kind materials or services, property for construction or rehabilitation, or property for resale. “Habitat is an important way to improve our community. I encourage everyone to support its mission of improving housing and neighborhoods” said Mike Ferguson, lead team member.
Habitat for Humanity Menominee River was founded in 1994 and has served over forty families with new home construction, rehabilitated homes, and minor repairs in Dickinson County. It has also partnered with others to support neighborhood redevelopment with rebuilt parks, trails, sidewalks and streets.
