AFFORDABLE EXTERIOR HOME REPAIRS FOR LOW-INCOME HOMEOWNERS
Habitat for Humanity Menominee River has a program (A Brush with Kindness), that provides exterior home repairs to qualifying homeowners. Repairs include, but are not limited to, painting, landscaping, and other minor repairs.

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS Interested homeowners must be able to demonstrate:
- Proof of ownership, homeowner's insurance, and residency in the Dickinson/Iron/Menominee County.
- Financial need. Families must earn less than the area's median income. Click here for cost details
- Home Repairs are led by trained crew leaders and completed by HFHMR volunteers.

A Brush with Kindness (ABWK)

  • A Brush with Kindness is a benevolent program serving low-income homeowners who struggle to maintain their homes.

  • A Brush with Kindness focuses on exterior home repair services (painting, minor exterior repairs, landscaping, and/or exterior clean-up) performed by volunteers and led by Habitat for Humanity staff.

  • A Brush with Kindness compliments Habitat's core building program. It serves a different population, yet it completes our goal of revitalizing neighborhoods by gathering groups of volunteers work alongside able bodied homeowners to revitalize a home’s exterior.

  • A Brush with Kindness are teams led by our experienced staff, given support and tools making the experience of helping others a positive one.

  • A Brush with Kindness uses volunteers, donated materials and low interest loans to make repairs affordable, thereby maintaining the health and safety of the occupants, preserving the dwelling, and enhancing neighborhoods and the city at large.

  • A Brush with Kindness targets specific areas in need, making a noticeable impact, revitalizing the appearance of the homes, and strengthening connections in the community.

  • A Brush with Kindness partners with community and church organizations helping us to become more familiar with the needs of the neighborhood, assist in referring qualified homeowners, and identify neighborhood areas that have the most need. Some neighborhoods assist with acquiring volunteer and financial resources.

  • A Brush with Kindness compliments HFH core values of need, ability to pay and willingness to partner. It allows us to serve a different population, yet follows the same tenets established for our home purchase.

How the ABWK Program Works
- Applicants must be the owner and resident of an A Brush with Kindness home.
- A sliding scale is used to determine costs for families involved with an A Brush with Kindness project. (The chart has an example.)
- Applicants must agree to have a non-interest bearing lien that is payable in full in the event of sale, default, transfer of title or payoff of the first mortgage placed upon the home. It is removed if the homeowner remains in the home for five years.
NO. OF PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLD 1 2 3 4 5 6
55% OF THE MEDIAN INCOME $19,690 $22,550 $25,355 $28,160 $30,415 $32,670
COST TO HOMEOWNER $98 $113 $127 $141 $152 $163

ABWK Requires Homeowner Involvement.
Repairs are led by trained crew leaders and completed by volunteers. If selected to partner for A Brush with Kindness, homeowners must:
Be on site and work everyday until the project is completed.
• Must remain the resident and owner of the home for at least five years after the job is completed.
• Sign a covenant that demonstrates their understanding of partnership.
